The everyday imagery of hockey fights found in Toronto newspapers and their accompanying literary descriptions inspired me to develop these as woodblock prints - in a way that could comment on the “commomplace” nature of the images and imitate to some small degree, the spirit of Ukiyoe Sumo Wrestler and Actor prints. I had begun working with woodblock technique, hockey and other imagery as part of my Fine Art Degree at the U of T and felt that the “Fight” series seen here, completed around 2014, was successful.
